Trying to Understand the Mass Psychology

Capita Selekta lecture material held on Wednesday, March 30, 2011 discussing the topic of mass psychology. Discussion that is not too difficult but a lot of things that can be discussed from this material that makes it look quite complex to be understood only in approximately one half hour.

If you look at some of the phenomena or events that occur in our downtown today, many things that can be used as the discussions related to the psychology of the masses. However, before examining further, it helps us understand first what it called the psychology of the masses. According to Gustave Le Bon, a pioneer of mass psychology, mass psychology is the definition of a crowd numbering hundreds or thousands who gathered and entered into a relationship for a while, because of the interest and the interests which are temporary. Crowds of these people who are called by the masses. In the mass there is no interaction that occur evenly, there is no clear structure and the amount can be ascertained much. Crowds of people is often found when there is an event that occurs suddenly excited such as demonstrations, fights, traffic accidents, and others.

Mass psychology is closely related to the behavior of the masses which are formed when they agreed to be the mass inside an event. Usually the behavior is formed in which the collective behavior of this behavior leads to social and political movements that aim to achieve changes in social and political aspects as well.

However, it is very unfortunate that this behavior gives the adverse implications for the mass itself. Collective action that do not rely on mass mobilization and leadership and moves automatically because of the encouragement of individual consciousness is very strong. If allowed to follow the path that allows the emergence of the ongoing actions that are less enjoyable as a result of differences in attitudes between individuals who will ultimately self-defeating. For example we can see in the demonstration activities that often occur in Jakarta. Not a few events that ended with a demonstration of chaos occurs even anarchy. However, not all mass activities that give bad impact for each individual who participates in it. There are several mass activities can also provide a good impact as a crowd of people flocked to watch the concert. With the same goals and interests of a mass can behave well, respect and appreciate each other even with strangers.

For that, we as individuals must be smart in choosing the position of the masses. Do we want to be a good mass or masses are not responsible. It's good we would prefer to be a good mass to build a safe country, peaceful, and serene.
